What will I be?

From a young age Florence Nightingale knew she wanted to help people and be a nurse.

We thought about where our futures might take us. Here are our thoughts.
"I want to be a gymnast."
"I want to be an artist who paints huge pictures."
"I want to be a chef." *After finishing our learning about Florence Nightingale and local hero Edith Cavell, Rachel has changed her mind and decided she now wants to be a nurse too.*
"I want to be a gymnast."
"I want to be a footballer and play midfield."
"I want to be a hairdresser."
"I want to be a zoo keeper."
"I want to work the ghost train on a funfair."
"I want to be a policewoman, working in a big city."
"I want to be a fireman."
"I want to be a truck driver for Morrisons delivering the food."
"I want to be a hair stylist doing plaits."
"I want to be a footballer."
"I want to be a policeman working in the countryside."
"I want to be an air sea rescue helicopter pilot flying the Seaking helicopters."
"I want to be a gymnast. In the Olympics in ten years."
"I want to be a vet working with small and pet animals."
"I want to be an artist. I will make models and sculptures."
"I want to be a tennis player. I will play at Wimbledon when I'm older."
"I want to be a fair ground controller and a chef. I will have a fast car, maybe a Mercedes so I can get to my restaurant quickly."
"I want to be a construction builder making houses."
"I want to be an RAF jet pilot."
"I want to be an engineer and mechanic making and fixing things."
"I want to be a footballer. I will play for Arsenal."
"I want to be a footballer. I will be a striker."
Look out for some of these names and faces in another fifteen years or so to see if any of these dreams were fulfilled.

There's a bag.

How did it get here? Who does it belong to? What can we tell about it?
"It is like Paddington's suitcase."

"It looks old because it is all scratched and banged up"
"It has been made by stitching it, that's not how they make bags now, they have wheels and handles."
"It has an F and N on the front."
"That might stand for someone's name."

Should we open it? Unanimous decision. Yes! But put protective gloves on just in case.

A lantern. "It looks very old, maybe from an old war so they could see in the dark."
"Maybe this is a soldiers bag."
A long skirt. "So we know FN must be a lady."
A letter! From a lady called Florence.
"That is the same as the letters on the bag!"
Charlie and Tiegan have heard of the name Florence Nightingale, perhaps that is our owner.
She is leaving her family to travel by boat to a hospital. There is a war. She wants to be a nurse!
The letter is dated October 1854. We work it out, it is 162 years ago.
A map. "There are places on it, France, England, Italy, Turkey, Scutari, Crimea and Russia."
"Maybe that is where she went for the war."
  A hat. "It's a maids hat."
"No its a nurses hat."
 A sash. "It's like a mayor wears."
The sash reminds Jude of a mayors sash and he models this sash to show us. But this one says Scutari.
An apron. "so when she is doing operations she doesn't get blood."
A shawl. "It will be cold where she went." "They might fight for a long time she might be there a long time."
A blouse. "It is a whole nurse uniform from long ago."
Autumn helped Lauren dress into the clothes.
Willow helped Lauren with the shawl.
And the sash, hat and finally the lamp.
 All dressed up.
Just like a lady called Florence who went away to be a nurse in a war. She was around 162 years ago.
I wonder what we will discover next!

Sleep over

Douglas has spent a lovely evening with Chloe and her sister. He enjoyed sharing story time with them especially with such a fantastic selection of books.

Douglas felt very safe and happy with Chloe and liked spending time with her much more than being on his own in the classroom.

Tiger Facts

This term we have been researching all about tigers. Finding out information from their habitat, their family life, threats and dangers they face, eating and hunting to their appearance and how they move. We have asked and answered questions along the way. Our trip to Banham Zoo gave us more information too.
With our Learning Partners we have planned and created a fact sheet on the computer. We needed to type then agree to change the font, colour and size of our writing. Our sheets had to include a bold title, sub headings, information written in sentences, causal connectives and photographs.
