Houses from 1666

Look at these great pictures of the sort of houses which burnt down in the Great Fire of London.

The Fire Spreads!

There were a few reasons why the fire spread so quickly. The houses were made of wood, they were very close together, it had been a hot, dry summer and the wind was blowing the fire forward. The people tried putting the fire out with buckets, they used fire hooks, they tried water squirts and finally they blew up some houses with gunpowder. Luckily the wind also died down. The people escaped by boat on the river Thames or hid in stone or brick buildings.
